The difference between web design and web development.

Professional Website design and website development

We get asked frequently what the difference is between web design and web development and here is the answer!

Web designers are responsible for creating the look and feel or the user interface (UI) of the site. They are not concerned with the code that process data behind the scenes. We designers use HTML/CSS to create the look and graphic applications like Photoshop or Corel Draw to get his job done. Web designer work on the part of the website that is called the front-end.

Working with the designer is the web developer, who’s work is mostly concentrated on the back-end of the website and has very little to do with the UI. They are the people that have to retrieve, store, edit and update data from databases. Programming languages used by web developers are, amongst others, HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP, SQL and ASP. Web developers will decide how data is used when entered form an input form for example. Where data is stored and what happens with it once it is entered into the site.

Both the web designer and the web developer is needed for the creation of a website that looks good and functions as intended.

When deciding on a web company the questions you should ask yourself is:

Can my web design company do both?

Can they design and code a theme or custom for you?

Do you need a specific plugin for your WordPress site?

Many web design companies offer a CMS system like WordPress as a one size fits all solution to their customers and are only trained to work with that system, but what happens if you need a custom theme or some custom functionality or theme.

Even if you only want a small website it is important to choose a web design company that can develop a site that is scalable from the beginning. A website is a tool to grow your business and the website should be able to grow with your business.
